The result of 2014 Tumblr is evident all over the internet today. The 2014 Tumblr aesthetic acts as the antithesis of today’s climate of inclusion and diversity. The revival of this aesthetic almost feels like a step backward. Cosmetics brands widened the shade range for complexion diversity. Designer brands began incorporating fashion models of all shapes and sizes in an effort of body positivity. Gen Z and Alpha are lucky to grow up in a social climate where there is a cultural push for ‘relatability’ in the media. In a Refinery29 article, writer Ruby Staley recalls reblogging photos of women and models who were “stick-thin (sometimes sickly so), light-skinned, and traditionally beautiful” to the point that she had “fried my brain into thinking that looking this way was not only attainable, but totally essential to being viewed as attractive.” In 2014, I remember seeing a “justgirlythings” post about having a thigh gap and feeling the neurons in my brain rewire themselves. This sort of rhetoric supported by aesthetically-pleasing photographs softens the extent of these issues, showcasing that sometimes adopting an aesthetic can go too far. Stricter censorship has since been incorporated onto the site. Users on the site enabled each other and their body image issues without Tumblr’s interference. In 2012, users began to coin the term “thinspiration,” or “ thinspo,” to refer to images of thin body types used as inspiration for their own. In a place where people had the closest thing to free range of posting whatever they wanted on the internet, this also meant that Tumblr users took advantage of this freedom by spreading harmful content. Over time, Tumblr developed a reputation for its flexibility and for allowing its users to post content with little to no restriction. The topics ranged from Star Wars films to Sims 4 gameplay. Users had the freedom to blog about anything and everything they wanted through text, pictures, videos, gifs and other forms of media. Tumblr is a microblogging social network that reached peak usage in the early 2010s. However, it also brings with it the danger of reviving the romanticization of these unhealthy habits, and those who decide to indulge in this era should proceed with caution. This style simultaneously brings a sense of nostalgia and playfulness to the world of Generation Z fashion. Recently, this trend has crawled its way back into the heart of mainstream media through the revival of Doc Marten combat boots, fishnet stockings and Nirvana t-shirts. At the same time, this aesthetic was also notorious for the glorification of a range of societal issues such as substance abuse, body image and mental health issues. Tumblr was filled with grainy photographs of the night sky, winged black eyeliner and Effy Stonem of the British TV series “Skins,” embracing the dark and moody tones aesthetic. The 2014 Tumblr girl aesthetic ruled the creaks and crevices of the internet in the early 2010s. As you walk out the door, you throw in your earbuds, and “Robbers” by The 1975 blasts in your ears.
